The title, "Doctor of the Church", was first given to certain saints on September 20, 1295, by Boniface XIII. They included Saint Ambrose, Saint Augustine, Saint Jerome, and Saint Gregory the Great. The next added as Saint Thomas Aquinas and since then has grown to include thirty-three saints.
