Corazon Aquino was President of the Philippines between 1986 and 1992. After her husband Benigno was assassinated upon arriving at the Manila airport from exile in the United states, she led what became known as the people's revolution. The world stopped and held its breath when about a million people, many dressed in yellow, holding rosaries and flowers in their hands stopped war tanks which were advancing towards them. Religious sisters (nuns), armed with only their Rosaries, knelt and prayed in front of them. The tanks stopped in their tracks, changed sides, and started supporting Aquino. Consequently, Ferdinand Marcos, who began his dictatorial ruling of the Philippines in 1972, and his wife, Imelda, were exiled to Hawaii. Corazon also survived 8 coup attempts during her 6 years as President.
Corazon, known as Cory to millions of Filipinos. was diagnosed with cancer. She was a devout Catholic who assisted at daily Mass and prayed the Rosary daily. Whenever crisis hit the country, Corazon reminded them that they once astonished the world and they could again. She was born January 25, 1933, and passed on into Eternal Life on August 1, 2009, after suffering from colon cancer. She told those close to her that she offered her suffering fro the people of her country.
